The Planet We Still Cannot See
After satellites, sensors, models and AI, some of Earth's most important states remain hidden by depth, scale, timing, physics or simple absence of data.

OBSERVABILITY
A planet covered in satellites can still contain enormous regions that are barely observed. The contradiction is only apparent. A satellite sees the surface it can physically sense, at the time it passes, through the medium its instrument responds to. Everything else must be sampled another way, inferred, or left blank.
The previous volumes followed a transformation from observation to representation, prediction and intelligence. Each step made more of Earth computationally available. None of them removed the older constraint underneath the stack: a system cannot reason directly about a state for which no usable evidence exists. Better models can interpolate a gap. They cannot retroactively turn an unobserved event into an observation.
Some blind spots are imposed by physics. Light does not travel through kilometres of seawater or soil. Some are imposed by sampling. A methane leak that lasts two hours may occur between orbital passes. Some are biological. A soil microbial community can change while every surface pixel looks unchanged. Some are institutional. Weather stations, monitoring budgets and public tracking systems are not distributed evenly across the planet.
This volume is about observability itself: what can be measured directly, what can only be inferred, what disappears between samples, what remains hidden behind other things, and what happens when absence of data is mistaken for absence of change. The most dangerous blind spot is not the place we know is blank. It is the place our interface has already coloured in.
