When Earth Became Computable

Before anything can be forecast, it has to be written down in a form a machine can read. That sounds like a technicality. It is actually the largest and least examined transformation in this book: the centuries-long project of converting rivers, soil, air, animals, harvests and human movement into numbers with positions, timestamps and identities attached.

The second volume followed how we learned to watch. This one follows what watching produced. A thermometer turns warmth into a number on a scale somebody agreed on. A pixel turns a hectare of living ground into a single reflectance value. A tag on a whale turns an animal into a row that updates. Each of those conversions made something computable that had not been computable before.

Every one of them also threw something away. That is the thread running under all nine chapters here. Representation is lossy by construction, and the loss is never random: it is chosen, usually by whoever built the instrument, usually for practical reasons, and usually without a record of what was discarded. A soil map at 30 meters cannot see the wet corner of a field the farmer has known about for thirty years. A species label cannot carry the individual animal's history. A pixel averages away everything smaller than itself.

The question this volume asks is not whether the conversion was worth making. It plainly was. The question is narrower and more useful: what exactly did each act of measurement decide to keep, and what did it decide the world could do without?
